Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton Honored with Calvary Women’s Services Hope Award

On Tuesday, May 14th, business and community leaders joined Calvary Women’s Services as Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton was recognized with the Hope Award.

Congresswoman Norton was presented the honor at Calvary Women’s Services’ Twelfth Annual Hope Awards Dinner. Congresswoman Norton has spent her life working tirelessly for civil rights and free speech – especially for women. Congresswoman Norton was elected as a delegate to Congress in 1990, and has been reelected every two years since.

“The Hope Awards Dinner honors local leaders, celebrates the success of women at Calvary, and supports women who are working to transform their lives,” said Calvary Board President Tracy Ballard. “We are grateful to everyone who is supporting Calvary’s work with homeless women in this community.” This year’s event raised over $250,000 to support Calvary’s housing programs and support services.

The event was held on Tuesday, May 14 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. The emcee for the event was Calvary Women’s Services’ long-time supporter and past Hope Award honoree JC Hayward, one of Washington’s most respected broadcast journalists and the DC market’s first female news anchor. Ms. Hayward recently celebrated her 40th year at WUSA 9.

Along with the awards presentation, women who successfully graduated from Calvary’s programs shared their inspiring stories. This year’s event was a celebration of the completion of Calvary’s Building for the Future project, through which the organization purchased and renovated a new home in Anacostia. “We are so excited to celebrate this important moment in Calvary’s history,” said Executive Director Kris Thompson. “In our new location, Calvary is providing more opportunities for women to move out of homelessness and change their lives.” Calvary relocated in November 2012 and is now serving more women and growing its successful health, education and job readiness programs.

The event is sponsored by many national and local businesses, including Mark G. Anderson Consultants, Northrop Grumman, Performix Consulting, and Walmart, Inc.
