The Heart of CAbi Foundation Chooses Calvary Women’s Services as Recipient of the Mother’s Day Clothing Giveaway

Calvary Women’s Services – which provides homeless women with both housing and services to empower independent living – announced today receiving a donation of more than 150 brand new clothing items from the Heart of CAbi Foundation, to be used as part of a jobs readiness and interview skills course.

The clothing was distributed on Wednesday, June 19, as part of an evening celebration. Each woman at Calvary’s programs received several items of clothing, and Calvary supporters volunteered their expertise with makeup, hair styling and photography to give each woman a personalized makeover.

Waiting for her burgundy-red nails to dry, Tamela Smith reflected, “When you get your hair and nails done, all the little things we’re doing tonight, it gives you confidence. People who go through a lot of things, they need that boost.”

The Heart of CAbi Foundation takes applications for the Mother’s Day Clothing Give Away each spring; Calvary was one of five winners chosen nationwide. The clothing items include business-casual tops, sweaters, jackets and pants, as well as scarves.

Calvary plans to use this donation in conjunction with a job readiness and interview skills course. The course will cumulate with mock interviews, and the participating women will have an opportunity to dress the part.

Calvary Executive Director Kris Thompson adds, “This generous donation is very exciting for the women at Calvary who have set goals of securing jobs and finding stable sources of income. A brand new professional outfit can give a woman confidence to embark on her job search.”

Calvary has been undergoing a major program expansion that included moving into a newly renovated building in Anacostia in December of 2012. With more space for events and classes and an expansion in staff, Calvary has been able to offer many new programs and opportunities to the women they serve.

The Heart of CAbi Foundation, in partnership with CAbi, LLC, works to fulfill the mission of encouraging and empowering women in need due to a crisis or other life circumstances, through the gifts of clothing, financial support, and volunteer efforts. CAbi LLC is a personalized shopping company that brings together women to sample new fashions and buy clothing in the comfort of their own homes.
