Calvary Women’s Services Joins #GivingTuesday

Calvary Women’s Services has partnered with #GivingTuesday, a daylong national movement to bring attention to giving and philanthropy. Coinciding with Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday, which falls on December 3, aims to create a national holiday that uses the momentum of Black Friday and Cyber Monday to celebrate the giving season.

Calvary Women’s Services provides safe housing and support services to homeless women in Washington, DC. Their mission is two-fold: to provide homeless women with a place to live and basic services and to help educate and empower women for independent living. For their #GivingTuesday campaign, Calvary has galvanized a committed group of members of our Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff to raise funds to support their housing and support services programs. “The spirit of Giving Tuesday celebrates giving, and our volunteers and donors naturally embody that generosity,” said Kris Thompson, Calvary Women’s Services’ Executive Director. “Celebrating Giving Tuesday gives all of us a fun way to make a huge difference for the women at Calvary.”

The inaugural #GivingTuesday campaign in 2012 was founded by the 92nd street Y and the United Nations Foundation. “92nd Street Y is, at its heart, a community center – we’ve been bringing people together for almost 140 years,” said Sol Adler, 92Y Executive Director. “#GivingTuesday allows us to create a new kind of community – across geographical borders – around the idea of ‘doing good.’” The 2012 #GivingTuesday campaign earned national media attention and trended on social media, which fueled a 53% increase in online charitable giving compared to the previous Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

This year, over 6,500 corporate and nonprofit organizations have partnered with #GivingTuesday, and this year’s campaign is expected to surpass last year’s charitable giving figures.
