Volunteer Spotlight: Lori Kartchner

It is fitting to celebrate Lori Kartchner as our spotlighted volunteer of the month because June marks Lori’s third anniversary of volunteering with Calvary Women’s Services. Lori has contributed over 250 hours of time and talent over the last three years. She is one of the indispensable volunteers who made a seamless transition from our old facilities to our current home on Good Hope Road. Lori supports Calvary’s programs as an Overnight Volunteer with grace and ease. Her continuous reliability paired with the warm, gentle spirit she brings with her every time she is on-site make her an indispensable support to our Calvary residents. Thank you, Lori, for all you do!

Where are you from?

I grew up in Missouri and have lived in DC for three and half years.

Share a fun fact about yourself.

I love to ride my bike. You may have seen me riding to and from Calvary when I volunteer!

Why do you volunteer at Calvary?

I volunteer at Calvary because I want to help to alleviate homelessness in my community. I saw a great need when I moved to D.C. about three years ago and knew I wanted to help somehow, but didn’t have the financial means to contribute in that way. Calvary has been a great way for me to help support women as they improve their lives.

What has surprised you most about volunteering at Calvary?

I was surprised at how much Calvary does to help the residents. It goes way beyond giving them a place to sleep at night.

What would you tell someone considering getting involved with Calvary?

It’s great! It is a wonderful organization to work with because they are well-organized, well-executed and the people are kind, gracious and passionate. Also, it’s an incredible feeling to know you’re part of an organization that really works to empower the members of our community.

If you had to choose ONE word to describe Calvary what would it be?

Super!

Overnight Volunteers such as Lori support our staff and residents by supervising our programs from 9:00 pm until 7:00 am every night of the week. If you would like to learn more about volunteering at Calvary, please contact Catherine Bisson at cbisson@calvaryservices.org or (202) 678-2341.
