Calvary Women’s Services Receives 2014 Board Leadership Award

Calvary Women’s Services was recognized last night by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement as the winner of the 2014 Board Leadership Award. Calvary will receive a $10,000 grant; communications exposure through print, radio, television, and social media; and training and development opportunities for the board and executive director through BoardSource and the Center’s Learning & Leadership Institute.

“We are honored to receive the 2014 Board Leadership Award,” said Kristine Thompson, Calvary’s executive director. “Calvary has undergone tremendous growth over the last five years, including a capital campaign and the relocation of our programs to Ward 8. This growth would not have been possible without the dedication, investment, and strong leadership of our board of directors. We are thrilled to be able to recognize their commitment to our organization and this community.”

“We are motivated by the dynamic leadership of our 2014 nominees and proud to acknowledge Calvary Women’s Services as a 2014 Award Winner. High performing boards can make the difference for operations, outcomes and the overall sustainability of nonprofits,” said Center CEO Glen O’Gilvie. “Our competition identifies organizations exhibiting good governance and innovative practices that can be shared, influencing a stronger nonprofit sector.”

Another organization that works to empower women, the YWCA National Capital Area, was also recognized last night as an Award Winner. The organization is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

Finalists were selected through a three-step judging process including a comprehensive nomination form; in-person interview with board members and the executive director; and a site visit attended by board members, the executive director and representatives from the community.

Members of the business, philanthropic, and nonprofit community served on the Award Selection Committee and searched for examples of outstanding boards that have moved beyond recommended best practices to bring new levels of engagement and focus that deliver results for their respective organizations.

The Center for Nonprofit Advancement, in partnership with CohnReznick LLP and with educational support from BoardSource, launched the Board Leadership Award in 2011 to recognize and spotlight outstanding leadership from boards of directors of Washington-area nonprofit organizations. The award recognizes the role that boards play in building and sustaining successful organizations, assuring that they are well-led, well-supported and responsive to the people and communities they serve.
