Volunteer Spotlight: Rubie Williams and the Magic of Haircuts

Rubie (left) with a former resident of Calvary

Rubie Williams is a professional hair stylist who has been volunteering at Calvary for over two years. She gives free haircuts and styling services to women on the last Friday of each month. Although some women are hesitant to entrust their hair to a volunteer at first, Rubie’s consistent high quality work and attention to detail always win them over. These days, women at Calvary eagerly anticipate their monthly appointment with Rubie.

We had the chance to catch up with Rubie and ask her about her experiences as a volunteer here:

In your own words, how are you involved at Calvary?

I’m involved in doing the women’s hair. This makes them feel good about their appearance, and if they have a job interview it helps them look good for their interview.

How did you get started with Calvary Women’s Services?

After listening to another volunteer talk about her experiences at Calvary, I was inspired to get involved myself. I thought that giving haircuts might be a great way to help build the women’s self-esteem. The staff at Calvary thought it was a great idea.

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

I have a mobile hair salon on wheels, and I’m an entrepreneur!

Why do you volunteer with Calvary?

I volunteer with Calvary because I love the women and the staff. The women at Calvary get wonderful assistance from both the staff and the volunteers at Calvary.

Have you had any unique experiences with giving haircuts at Calvary?

Yes, I’ve had unique experiences with several women. I gave one woman a totally new look, and when I finished and held up the mirror, she started crying tears of joy. Another woman had very long hair – we decided to cut it short.  After the cut, she had a smile that lit up the whole building.
