Shawn Yancy Named 2024 Hope Award Recipient by Calvary Women’s Services

WASHINGTON – April 16, 2024 – Calvary Women’s Services today announces Shawn Yancy, renowned Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist, philanthropist, and artist, as the recipient of the 2024 Hope Award. The Hope Award, presented annually by Calvary Women’s Services, recognizes an individual who embodies Calvary’s mission to empower women to transform their lives and end their homelessness for good.

Yancy is recognized for her philanthropic spirit, unwavering confidence, and efforts to amplify women’s voices. Her dedication to women in DC embodies the spirit of the Hope Award, inspiring ripples of transformation throughout the broader community.

“Calvary is thrilled to present the 2024 Hope Award to Shawn Yancy,” said Kris Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Calvary Women’s Services. “For over two decades, she has been an influential presence on the DC community, creating an inspiring legacy through her exceptional reporting and profound philanthropic endeavors.”

Throughout her career, Yancy has not only excelled as the anchor of the evening newscasts on NBC4 in Washington, DC, but has also championed the voices of underserved communities. Her work has enabled her to tell meaningful and impactful stories from around the DMV region.

“It is an honor to receive this award from Calvary Women’s Services,” reflected Shawn Yancy. “Empowering women has been a driving force in my life, and I am deeply grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had to make a positive impact on the lives of my neighbors.”

Yancy was recently named a 2023 Washingtonian of the Year for her work with her non-profit, the Giving Foundation for Women and Children, which she founded in 2010. Yancy has also served on the boards of a number of local non-profits including A Wider Circle & Dress for Success DC – two organizations that support women at Calvary.

As an abstract contemporary artist, Yancy explores the complexity of the human experience. Her art serves as a powerful expression of her passion for storytelling, inviting others to find comfort in the everyday colors of life.

A proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Yancy is deeply committed to making a difference in our society. She also finds fulfillment in her personal life, alongside her husband, three sons, daughter-in-love, and two dogs.

Calvary will recognize Shawn Yancy as the 2024 Hope Award Honoree at its annual Hope Gala, on April 25th. Learn more about the Hope Gala and make a donation to support women working to end their homelessness for good at: calvaryservices.org/event/hope-gala
