Women Leading Change at Calvary: Sarah Cannington

1. What is your role at Calvary?

“I am the Community Engagement Manager at Calvary Women’s Services, which means I bring in volunteers and corporate partners to support the work that our residents and staff are doing. I also secure in-kind donations to ensure that the women in our program have everything that they need!”

2. What does Women’s History Month mean to you in your work at Calvary?

Women’s History Month is a time to honor and celebrate the wonderful and inspiring women at Calvary, both our residents and staff! It’s also an opportunity to deepen connections with our volunteer and donor community in ways that remind our residents just how much they are supported and valued. During this month, our volunteers and donors often add a thoughtful extra touch to their service, whether it’s hosting a special luncheon, collecting much-needed program supplies, or making time for an extra volunteer activity.

3. How do you help turn volunteer interest into meaningful, lasting support for the women we serve?

Many volunteers come to Calvary with a desire to uplift and support women. Some bring lived experiences that mirror those of our residents, while others connect through their workplace or faith communities. However they come to Calvary, we hope their volunteer experience feels meaningful and inspiring.

I work closely with each volunteer to match their interests and strengths with opportunities that also meet Calvary’s needs. Once volunteers find a role that clicks and can see their impact firsthand, it usually creates a deeper commitment that lasts beyond their time at Calvary. I especially love it when volunteers are so connected to the work that they bring friends or family to our events!

4. Can you share a moment or experience where you saw the impact of volunteers on the women we serve?

Last year, I had the joy of working with an incredible group of women from Ebenezer AME Church during their annual Women’s Outreach Day. From the very beginning, it was clear how deeply they cared about our residents. They led a beautiful mindfulness activity that honored the strength and resilience of the women we serve, shared thoughtful self-care goody bags, and wrapped up the day by enjoying a delicious meal together.

What stood out most was the sense of connection they created and the way our residents truly felt seen, valued, and celebrated. It was a powerful reminder that even a single afternoon of kindness and presence can leave a lasting impact!

Donate this Women’s History Month by supporting women rebuilding their lives after homelessness.
