Reclaiming Her Life Back: Paula’s Resilience

Paula shared that before coming to Calvary, she was staying in a crowded shelter and trying to navigate housing applications completely on her own. “All I knew was I just didn’t want to be in the shelter any longer.” While there, she was encouraged to apply to different housing programs, though the process initially felt confusing. After about two weeks, she received a call from Calvary offering her a bed, something she described as “life-changing,” which “blessed my soul.”

When she arrived at Calvary, she was especially grateful to have a safe place she could call home. Having structure and stability at Calvary helped her begin to rebuild her sense of self.

“I had lost myself… I had never been in that situation before.”

Paula especially appreciated the structure Calvary provided through her daily routines, which gave her that extra hand in regaining her motivation.

“This might sound like a little thing to some people, but to me it’s a big thing because it helped me get back on my grind.”

Paula described facing significant challenges before arriving at Calvary, including health issues, housing instability, and emotional hardship. She reflected on a period of depression, sharing that there were times she felt deeply overwhelmed and did not think she would make it. However, she also spoke about her resilience and how she worked to support her mental well-being, including positive self-talk and daily affirmations to stay grounded and hopeful.

“I expect great things to happen to me… I have to preach this thing over myself every day.”

A key part of Paula’s experience at Calvary has been the support of staff, particularly her case manager, Courtney. She described Courtney as deeply committed and persistent, actively helping her navigate the housing application process and advocating on her behalf. Paula emphasized that Calvary staff treat all residents with the utmost care and respect, creating a dignified environment where women feel supported rather than judged.

“They don’t look down on you… You don’t know what somebody’s situation is.”

Throughout her time at Calvary, Paula has been actively working toward securing permanent housing. She has continued to apply to multiple housing opportunities, despite facing setbacks within the process. With support from Calvary’s staff, she recently applied for an apartment that she is hopeful about and sees as a promising next step toward stability and independence.

Paula also highlighted the broader sense of community at Calvary. She described that staff regularly organize activities for the residents, fostering an encouraging and collaborative environment between staff and clients. In turn, Paula has also supported other residents by helping them access resources, including offering rides to apply for housing.

Reflecting on her journey, Paula emphasized that while Calvary provides the resources and support women need to thrive, her personal effort played an essential role. She shared that residents at Calvary are willing to apply themselves and take initiative, increasing success.

“You can get in there and get comfortable, but you have to apply yourself… they will go to bat for you.”

When asked about hope, Paula shared, “At first I didn’t have any hope, but now I have it… this is my new beginning.” Paula has now rediscovered hope for the future during her time at Calvary. Calvary supported Paula in regaining her stability and flourishing with confidence.
