Volunteer Spotlight: Stacey Stiner

Stacey Stiner is our spring Community Engagement intern at Calvary Women’s Services. She is currently finishing up her junior year at The George Washington University and studying public health with a double minor in psychology and business administration.

As the semester comes to a close and her internship finishes up, we wanted to sit down with Stacey and hear about her experiences at Calvary over the past few months.

What is your role here at Calvary?

Every day I’m doing something different, which is great! I assist staff members with a variety of tasks such as coordinating volunteer schedules, making sure everything is set up and ready for the education classes, and helping out with the Hope Awards Dinner.

Why did you choose to get involved at Calvary?

I was looking for volunteer opportunities at local DC nonprofits that serve either women or children. Calvary’s work empowering the lives of homeless women really caught my eye. While I was applying to volunteer, I saw that they were also looking for an intern for the spring semester. I decided to apply for that as well, and thankfully I got the internship!

What has been your favorite experience at Calvary?

I’ve had the chance to sit in on some of the education classes and help the facilitators with class activities. During the classes, I love listening to the discussions that the women have. There is such a strong sense of community and sisterhood here. You can really tell that the women are supporting each other.

I would also say that working here at Calvary has really opened up my eyes to what’s going on with homelessness in DC. When you’re in certain parts of town, you would never know the level of need there is here. Learning about how Calvary empowers homeless women as well as seeing all the different ways that people can get involved gives me a lot of hope.

What would you tell someone who is considering volunteering or interning at Calvary?

Get ready to jump right in, there are so many things that interns end up helping with. Even though there is a lot going on, you can tell that everyone is really working together and organized. I love the team spirit of the staff!
