Volunteer Spotlight: Cheryl Williams

Cheryl Williams volunteers at the front desk of Calvary Women’s Services on a weekly basis. A former nonprofit management professional and school teacher, she is now retired and enjoys the opportunity to fill her schedule with meaningful volunteer activities.

“Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, continue to learn new things, and learn about other ways of life.” We spoke with Cheryl about her experiences volunteering at Calvary and how she first got involved with the organization.

What is your volunteer role at Calvary Women’s Services?

I staff the front desk on a weekly basis. That includes answering the phones, supporting the work of the development department, and welcoming visitors. I have also helped out with fundraising in the past.

How did you get started volunteering with Calvary?

I was first involved with some of Calvary’s partner organizations. Through my connections at Miriam’s Kitchen and Western Presbyterian Church, I discovered Calvary. Throughout my career I’ve been highly involved with organizations that focus on women’s issues, both professionally and as a volunteer. I saw that Calvary touches on a lot of the issues that I really care about.

Has anything surprised you about volunteering at Calvary?

I participated in an online fundraising campaign during one holiday season. After reaching out to a lot of my personal contacts about supporting the work of Calvary, I was blown away by the response. I couldn’t believe the number of people that responded to my messages and were willing to chip in.

What would you tell someone who is considering volunteering at Calvary?

For those of us volunteering at Calvary, it really feels like you’re making a contribution. I feel like I’m an essential part of the organization and that the work I’m doing is having an impact.
