Calvary Captain Countdown – 10 Days Until the Walkathon!

The other half of the Bolton sister team, Katie, with the story of how she and Liz first got involved with Calvary:

“In 2005, my sister (also a Captain!) was looking for volunteer opportunities while I was a student it fit with our schedules and working in a women’s shelter seemed relevant to our degrees in Women’s Studies. We started coming once or twice a month in the fall, but that summer, when summer breaks and vacations depleted the volunteer numbers, we came in almost weekly.  We got to know the staff and the residents and got a better look at the ways Calvary helped its residents.  Six years later, we’ve both moved over to the Pathways program—my sister as an overnight and occasional meal volunteer, and I’m on staff as a program manager.”

Why does Katie walk…?

“The Walkathon has been an important part of homeless service agencies in DC for years. On top of being a major fundraiser, it’s a day of community and a hugely visible reminder that homelessness is a persistent problem in DC. Whether there’s a huge Walkathon or many mini-walks, next year, the agencies participating will still be here, working hard for the most vulnerable people of our city. Yes, I’m staff at Calvary, and that’s part of why I’m walking for them, but I’m also walking to support our programs’ expansion and the outstanding work my colleagues do every day.”

“The weather is always a wild card. Some years are sunny and mild. But one year, that morning was so cold that despite all of our winter layers, we were chilled to our bones… but we stuck it out for those who don’t have anywhere to go when the weather gets bad.”
