Friday Round-Up: This week in the news

  • The Washington Post covers a new report demonstrating the shocking fact that DC welfare recipients don’t know how to find and access the education and hard skills training that is offered. http://bit.ly/TinNc
  • This past Wednesday was Veteran’s Day. Unfortunately, the state of our veterans as they attempt to assimilate back into society is not very good. Veterans are more than twice as likely than average to face homelessness. This is a great Editorial on “Healing our Troubled Vets”  http://tinyurl.com/yzslhn8
  • Women, Poverty And Health: A Vicious Cycle — http://su.pr/1nU0oP
  • Even more need to stand up and continue the fight against the criminalization of homelessness. http://tinyurl.com/yjwx86z

Next week, one week before Thanksgiving, is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week. Nationwide next week schools, communities and cities attempt to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness. In DC, the week will culminate in the 22nd annual Help the Homeless Walkathon on Saturday, November 21st. As, if you’re a regular reader of Calvary Comments, you might have heard quite a bit about already.

This is one of the largest fundraisers of the year for Calvary, and we really need your help. It takes just three hours of your time and can make a huge impact in our community. It’s just $25 to register ($15 if you’re 25 and under). Sign up here www.helpthehomelessdc.org and mark Calvary Women’s Services (DC010) as your beneficiary organization. Then join us and our many friends from around the area for coffee, donuts, and making a difference – just one week from tomorrow on the National Mall!
