Students at Hart Middle School will Learn about Homelessness through a Mini-Walk to Benefit Calvary Women’s Services

On November 3, students at Hart Middle School in Southeast DC will take part in a mini-walk to benefit Calvary Women’s Services. Prior to the walk around the school’s grounds, students will take part in an awareness activity aimed to educate them about homelessness in their community and what they can do to help.

This marks Calvary’s third year partnering with Hart to put on this event that not only raises funds to help end homelessness, but also builds awareness on a local level within schools. More than 170 Hart students will participate in the mini-walk program.

The mini-walk is one of hundreds that will take place leading up to the 24th annual Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall on November 19. Mini-walks give participants a chance to raise funds and promote awareness on a smaller community scale.

Nearly 12,000 people in DC are homeless and the crisis is growing. Since 1988, Fannie Mae’s Help the Homeless program has raised over $85 million to support local organizations like Calvary Women’s Services that are working to prevent and end homelessness in the DC area.

The event will benefit Calvary Women’s Services, an organization that has offered housing and support services for women working to end their homelessness since 1983.

“At Calvary, we offer women a safe, caring place for tonight and support, hope and change for tomorrow,” says Calvary’s Executive Director Kris Thompson. “Combining support services and a secure place to live is the key to returning women to independent living.”  

Calvary’s approach of providing for the immediate need for shelter and meals as well as addressing the underlying causes of homelessness works. Every 5 days, a woman moves from Calvary into her own home.
