Calvary Women’s Services Hosts 14th Annual Hope Awards Dinner

At the 14th Annual Hope Awards Dinner on May 14, more than 300 individuals gathered at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center to celebrate the successes of women at Calvary Women’s Services and support vital programs for homeless women in Washington, DC. Guests raised more than $300,000 through the Hope Awards Dinner, which will support Calvary’s housing, health, education and employment programs for homeless women.

Rosie Allen-Herring was presented with this year’s Hope Award for her dedication to improving her community and the lives of all residents in the region. Mrs. Allen-Herring is the president and CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) and leads the organization’s initiatives in support of quality education, financial stability and good health.

“It’s humbling to receive this award from an organization that is so impactful and that restores hope to women in our community,” Mrs. Allen-Herring remarked. “Sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes we get off track. We all need support, and that’s what Calvary offers. It helps women who are experiencing homelessness.”

Verlette Ford currently lives in Sister Circle, Calvary’s permanent housing program. During the event she shared her personal story and experiences in overcoming addiction and homelessness. Verlette praised her case manager at Calvary for helping her secure a full-time job and a safe, beautiful one-bedroom apartment.

“Calvary gave me comfort, stability, structure and guidance,” Verlette said. “I’m here today to say that I made it this far, and I am so proud of myself. I never knew that life could be this good. If you are willing to help yourself, Calvary will stand by you and help you succeed in life.”

MGAC was the Presenting Sponsor of the 14th Annual Hope Awards Dinner. The event was also generously sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, Performix Consulting and Walmart, in addition to many other organizations, families and individuals.

“We are deeply grateful to all of the donors, corporate partners and volunteers who invest in Calvary Women’s Services and give back so generously,” said Kris Thompson, Calvary’s executive director. “Their contributions make a tangible difference in the lives of women at Calvary, and give women hope for the future.”
