Finding a New Home

Sister Circle provides homes for women who are ready for independent living but may still benefit from personalized care and support. It is open to women who have lived at Calvary Women’s Services as well as women who are referred by other housing programs in the city.

Janet moved into a Sister Circle apartment in 2011 after living in a transitional housing program. She had been homeless for several years after ending a toxic marriage and battling addictions. Moving to Sister Circle resulted in many positive changes in Janet’s life.

Not long after moving in to Sister Circle, Janet began working part-time as an administrative assistant, and actively participated in the Relapse Prevention Group at Calvary. She also served as the Sister Circle secretary, and was responsible for distributing birthday cards and recognizing sobriety milestones of her peers. Other officers in Sister Circle organize events and field trips and share information and resources with residents.

After living in her apartment with nearly four years of sobriety and good health under her belt, Janet decided she was ready to move to a new home where she could enjoy even greater independence. Her case manager assisted Janet with looking for housing and completing paperwork. She waited on affordable housing lists for almost one year before securing a place. Around the same time, she was promoted to a full-time position. The increase in hours and pay made it much easier for her to afford her new home.

Janet told her case manager that moving out of Sister Circle was an exciting and happy experience, but that she also felt some sadness about leaving the place that she had come to know as home. We know that Janet will continue to grow and tap into her strengths as she transitions to this next stage of her life.
