Long-Time Garden Plans Come to Life

When Calvary Women’s Services re-located to a completely renovated home on Good Hope Road, everyone was thrilled by the new surroundings. The bedrooms were more spacious and comfortable; the industrial kitchen gleamed; the LEAP area was ready to handle any class we could imagine.

However, one part of our home was missing. The small, concrete lot behind the building has been in need of a makeover. After the right amount of dreaming and preparation, we were so happy to fill a mostly empty lot with brand-new furniture and raised garden beds that transformed it into a greener getaway.

before and after

Our new garden has been the perfect space for women to come outside and take a break from classes in the afternoon or before settling in for the night. Staff members have also enjoyed eating lunch and holding meetings together on sunny days.

Women spent one afternoon this summer filling the raised beds with ornamental plants, produce and herbs. They have complete ownership over the plants that they water, prune and harvest. This season women are growing red and yellow cherry tomatoes, peppers, sorrel, beets, strawberries, parsley, mint and basil.

In the future, we plan on painting the walls surrounding the garden to make it an even more welcoming and beautiful space. Stay tuned for more updates!

We want to thank everyone who gave donations, time, energy and plant-based knowledge in order to bring Calvary’s garden to life. Special thanks go out to Lindsay Dessem, Anne Van Allen, the Junior League of Washington, GCAAR Cares and Gingko Gardens.
