A Mother-Daughter Reunion

Both of Rhomika’s parents died before she was 10 years old. Until recently, she spent most of her life in foster care and moving from place to place. Now she is doing everything she can to be a strong, supportive mother for her young daughter. That included coming to Calvary Women’s Services, where she could stop moving and focus on her health and stability.

Rhomika came to Calvary in the spring. On the day that she moved in, she thought, “I’m safe.” She said that during her time at Calvary, she learned a lot from other women, including how to “sit with her emotions and face them.”

For Rhomika, the hardest part of living at Calvary was being separated from her daughter. She said there were times when she felt like it was time to go, but she forced herself to stay until the right moment. Rhomika enrolled in Step Up DC over the summer and secured a part-time job that she has held for several months.

Earlier this week Rhomika and her daughter moved into a two-bedroom apartment where they can live for the next two years. “I’m looking forward to enjoying our time together and strengthening our bond,” she said.

Being reunited with her daughter puts a smile on Rhomika’s face, but she admits to being uneasy about yet another big life change. “My nerves are up to the ceiling,” she said. “I just want to be a good mom and take good care of her.”
