Fall Career Fair at Calvary Women’s Services

Dozens of women from Calvary Women’s Services and partner agencies attended our annual Fall Career Fair on November 8th. From morning until early afternoon, women had the opportunity to discuss their qualifications and job opportunities with a diverse group of employers and service providers. The goal of the fair was to bring together women from the community with employers who had open positions and were eager to expand their recruiting pool.

Dena Bauman, Calvary’s workforce development manager, observed that a number of participants were offered interviews for the following week. “It was a win-win program and exciting to watch,” she said. “Women participating in the fair had direct access to high-quality employers that they otherwise might not have the chance to interact with.

The eleven employers and service providers attending the fair included: Burke & Herbert Bank, Colonial Parking, DC Connect, Dress for Success, First Class Workforce Solutions, Four Seasons Hotel, Pendergrast Alston Consulting Services, RCM of Washington, Sweetgreen, Together We Bake, and Unity Health Care.

One of the employers present, Latima Owens of Pendergrast Alston Consulting Services, appreciated having access to a local pool of talent. “I loved meeting all of the women from Calvary, and meeting women from the surrounding community and other agencies,” she explained. “I want everyone who is eligible to take advantage of these opportunities.

Calvary’s biannual career fairs are a part of our job placement program, Step Up DC. The purpose of Step Up DC is to provide comprehensive support to participants before, during, and after their job search to ensure women are employment ready and have the skills they need to retain and build a career.

Sasha, a resident at Calvary who participates in our job placement program, enjoyed the chance to put her job searching skills to work. “This was a great chance to show off my updated resume and talk about my work experience with actual employers,” she said. “Now I’m crossing my fingers in hopes that I’ll get a call-back and schedule some interviews!”
